বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশে করোনাভাইরাসের দ্বিতীয় ঢেউয়ের সংক্রমণ শুরু হয়েছে। বাংলাদেশে করোনার ‘প্রথম ঢেউ’ শেষ না হলেও এখনই গুরুত্বের সঙ্গে বিষয়টি আলোচিত হচ্ছে। আসন্ন শীতে করোনা পরিস্থিতি খারাপ হওয়ার যথেষ্ট আশঙ্কা রয়েছে। এ পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে সামনের দিনগুলোতে করোনা মোকাবেলায় জোরালো প্রস্তুতি নেয়া অত্যন্ত জরুরি।

Although a glimpse at the recent daily case counts may present a semblance of a controlled infection situation, a deeper look shall reveal otherwise. The percentage of daily tests that come out positive (test positivity rate) is high enough to clearly indicate that a large number of infections do remain unidentified and these undetected cases are spreading the disease throughout the community.

Let us not downplay the crisis as it does not take a mastermind to realize that the cost of underestimating

 the infection can be very expensive in the long run. The low death rate and high asymptomatic cases that have been noticed in the country has granted us an opportunity to minimize the damage, but only so if properly dealt with

সাম্প্র্রতিক সময় বাংলাদেশে হার্ড ইমিউনিটি নিয়ে বেশকিছু কথাবার্তা হচ্ছে। এর অধিকাংশই অত্যন্ত আশঙ্কাজনক, সেসঙ্গে হতাশাজনক তো বটেই। হার্ড ইমিউনিটি’র পক্ষে যে যুক্তিগুলো সেগুলো বিশ্লেষণ করলে দেখা যাবে, এখানে অর্থনীতি, সমাজব্যবস্থা, মানুষের বিহেভিওরিয়াল ব্যাপারগুলো আলোচিত হলেও সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যাপারটিই কিন্তু একেবারে পুরোপুরি উপেক্ষিত হয়েছে। সেটি হচ্ছে- ‘জীবন’। এটি কেবল হতাশার কথা তাই নয়, এর চেয়ে বড় উদ্বেগের আর কিছু এ মুহূর্তে হতে পারে না।

আমাদের দেশে মানুষের সংখ্যা অনেক বেশি বলেই কি তাদের জীবন এত মূল্যহীন?

'Lives or livelihood?' is the conflict haunting nations worldwide and Bangladesh is no exception. Whether to impose stricter restrictions to contain the virus or to relax such measures to earn livelihood has become the prime dilemma in the combat against the novel coronavirus.

Unlike previous months, Bangladesh is now experiencing a steeper rise in COVID-19 cases. The number of new infections has increased by more than 10,000 in less than two weeks. Although the country reported a total of 298 deaths related to COVID-19, the actual number would be higher as all suspected patients were not tested due to limited capacity.
